When she first introduced free motion quilting in 1984, Harriet set the quilting
world on its ear, and has been changing the look of quilting ever since. Unique
machine quilting techniques that will turn quilt tops into heirlooms in a
fraction of the time it takes to hand quilt will be taught. The actual sewing is
a small part of machine quilting, and the beginning of the class is lecture
filled with valuable information so the student knows what to expect and how to
avoid pitfalls along the way. A thorough discussion of preparing the quilt top,
work space, threads, notions, needles, etc. will be covered. Hands-on exercises
will be used to develop machine quilting skills, from walking foot ditch
quilting, to free motion feathers. Harriet is a master at teaching students “how
to learn to machine quilt”. Most of all, encouragement and excitement is taught,
giving students permission to become great machine quilters.
This workshop is designed to show you how many different ways you can dice a
worm (a 2 1/2” wide strip of fabric) to create fast and fun quilts. The blocks
you will make are various sizes. More likely, these will be samples for you to
learn the skills for making dozens of quilts. Because the quilts are based on 2
1/2” wide strips, these are wonderful for friendship quilts, scrap quilts, and
fabric exchanges! Don’t let the fact that the quilts are based upon strips fool
you. It is a wonderful class for introducing scrap or multi-fabric quilts, and a
variety of skills and techniques. By the end of this workshop, you will agree
that we have really “opened a can of worms”. This quilt is from the book, Open a
Can of Worms by Debbie Caffrey. Instructions will be provided in your handout.

Fabric choices make this easy to piece quilt a striking addition to your
collection. You will complete half of the project in class. Pattern will be
ordered on registration sheet, payment will be made to the instructor during the
class.
You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to piece this beautiful mountain landscape
using your choice of fabrics such as watercolor florals, grass, berries, rocks,
woods, and sky prints. This can be a small (22” x 30”) or medium (35” x 48”)
wall hanging, depending on the width you cut your fabric strips before you come
to class.
Crossed Canoes is a complicated looking block that is actually easy to piece
using foundation paper piecing methods. Although the Crossed Canoes block looks
quite contemporary, it has been traced at least as far back as the 1895 catalog
of the Ladies Art Company—the very first mail-order quilt pattern business. The
block is made up of four equal segments: two light/dark and two dark/light. With
only three seams to each quarter-block segment, it’s a snap to complete and a
natural choice for paper foundation piecing. Participants can complete blocks to
make a table runner or keep going and do enough blocks to make a complete quilt
top, the decision is completely up to them.
There are so many new and interesting threads and more coming out every year.
Rayon, cotton, trilobal polyester, silk, along with all the decorative threads
and yarns. In this lecture we will talk about how these yarns are used and how
to make them work with your machine. We will look at tensions, sewing machine
needles, thread weights, along with the various techniques to use these threads.
I will also show quilts and clothing where I have used the various techniques.
Norma Lee will share her quick and easy techniques for transforming strips,
squares and rectangles into a variety of interesting shapes. She has easy
formulas to help you determine the sizes you need to cut to make them fit into
any size block. These are techniques that can be useful to all skill levels from
the beginning quilter to the more advanced quilter.
In this demo I will show you how to take motifs from fabric and use them for
appliqué. I will demonstrate how to use thread to create depth and dimension to
your project. We will also look at types of fabric that are suited for this
technique along with various quilts.
This is a quilt as you go table runner. There will be other color combinations:
reds, blacks and whites, and yellow and blues, plus a couple of other
combinations to choose from at class time. Kits will be available at class time.
They will include backing, batting, pattern and fabric cut and ready to be sewn
in class. Prices for the kits will be $35.
You have finished creating your quilt top-now what? Join Kate while she shares
great tips and hints for the finishing “Bs” - borders, batting, backing, and
binding. This is important information you don’t usually have time to learn in a
quilt project, but which can greatly increase the quality of your finished
project.

Sew what’s new in notions or what have you not tried? Julie will show you some
of the newest notions on the market. There are a lot of new ‘tools’ that can
make your sewing and quilting easier or more accurate. Julie will show you some
of her favorite tools from all the years she has been sewing. Maybe you have a
special tool to share with the group. Perhaps it came from the kitchen or the
tool box.
What paints work well on fabric? How should they be applied? Do you need to use
special fabrics or tools? Kate will answer these questions and more as she
discusses how to apply color to fabric (remove color from fabric) with various
kinds of paints, paint sticks, bleach, resist, and yes, even rust. She has taken
several surface design classes since moving to MN, and she will share what she
has learned with those of you who are interested in exploring fabric painting.

Using this great technique for making half-square triangle units from Debbie’s
book Power Cutting, Too, you will learn how to make triangle units by the dozens
quickly, precisely, with no individual pressing, no dog ears to trim and no
paper to tear! Do not cut anything prior to class. The pattern for Coyote Tracks
will be provided during class. Bring your copy of Power Cutting, Too book if you
have one.
The Delectable Mountain border blocks look complicated but by using my ‘quick
and easy’ piecing techniques they are very easy to make and they go together
very quickly. The unique feature of this pattern is there are no points to lose
on the star blocks and no points to lose on the Delectable Mountain border
blocks. Once the technique has been learned these Delectable Mountain border
blocks would make a beautiful border to finish off any quilt. You will be
offered two options. Option #1—36” square wall hanging with one star in the
center. Option #2– 23” x 41” table runner with three side-by-side stars in the
center. There will be an $8 pattern fee to be collected during class. Patterns
will be available at class time.
This technique uses fusible bias tape and you quilt it when you sew the tape
down. The top of the quilt can be completed in class and students may start
quilting on this project, depending on how fast you like to work. You may order
your pattern on the registration form, payment will be made to the instructor
during the class.

You will love this quick and easy class that holds many quilting tools. This
will be a fun, yet inexpensive project that you shall be able to finish in
class. You can proudly display it to the envy of your friends. It will make a
great gift for that special friend in your life. The tote holds the mini cutting
mat, mini ruler, scissors and several other small Quilter’s gadgets. There will
be a few kits available, at class time, containing one mini mat, 1 x 6 ruler and
a 4” square ruler for a special price.
Yes, you can create a replica of a traditional cathedral window quilt entirely
by machine, using only squares of fabric. It is especially attractive with 30’s
prints. You will complete half of the project in class.
If you can sew, fold, and cut a straight line, you can make this easy quilt for
a special child in your life. You may cut and appliqué small images from
youthful focus fabrics, or make good use of your embroidery machine to create
the images that peek out of the center of each of these blocks. The sample has
hidden Sock Monkeys, but these block centers can be anything—even letters or
numbers or family photos. Class participants will receive detailed instructions
for completing the centers of the background squares before the workshop, so you
should be able to get most of the top finished during class. What a great gift
it will make for some new little one! Finished quilt is approximately 34” x 39”
(Pattern fee of $10.00 to be paid to instructor during class.)
Move it, use it, and don’t lose it! This lecture focuses on stash collecting,
organizing and utilizing. Learn what to collect, how to store it so you can find
it easily, and see wonderful multiple fabric quilts that result from having the
stash at your fingertips. Some slides and lots of show and tell.
REMEMBER TO SIGN UP FOR BANQUET SEATING AT THE
REGISTRATION TABLE WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR PACKET.
Enjoy learning true, professional techniques for beautiful machine appliqué. The
latest products will be covered, as well as tried and true methods for achieving
perfect appliqué by machine. Mock Hand appliqué techniques will give a hand
appliqué appearance, and is Harriet’s “instant gratification”. This 6 hour class
consist of 3 hours of satin stitch technique and 3 hours of buttonhole and
blanket stitch techniques including discussion of threads, needles tips and
tricks to perfecting these appliqué techniques.
This is one of Debbie’s Classy Patterns. The finished size is 57” x 57”.
Detailed instructions are in full color. Simple spinning stars in two sizes on
two contrasting background fabrics make this design a real eye-catching beauty!
The pattern will be provided to you during class.
The thirty degree kite shape triangle unit in this block is made using a
technique developed by Gayle Bong called, “Thirtysomething”. There are no
templates required to make this ‘easier than it looks unit’. It starts with
rectangles cut diagonally. After the unit is sewn it will be trimmed into shape
using the Thirtysomething Square Up Ruler, (to be ordered on the registration
form. Payment to instructor during class for $8). Once you have mastered the
Thirtysomething technique you can use it in other blocks requiring this shape or
design your own ‘one of a kind’ quilts using the Thirtysomething unit. You can
also use the Thirtysomething unit to make a pieced border for any quilt. The
class will offer two options: Option #1—a four block wall hanging approximately
36” square, Option #2—A two block table runner approximately 21” x 36”. There
will be an $8 pattern fee (pay instructor). If you purchase both ruler and
pattern the charge will be $12. Both ruler and pattern will be available at
class time.
Piece
background circles into squares, then machine appliqué the leaves using fusible
and machine blanket stitch. You will complete half of the project in class.
Ladies, this is the one you want to use for that wonderful bold fabric grouping
you have thought about using and could not figure out what pattern would work.
This one in brights will make your children from age one to fifty-one happy. You
will have fun creating curves using a single cut method with one gently curving
line cut up the center of a pair of fabric strips. Pagoda projects offer many
design options like dark fabrics toward the center, light fabrics toward the
center, some of each, various block placements and block rotation. In this class
you will make a table runner with two 12-inch blocks surrounded by a border
using up the remainder of your curved strips. The pattern will be available to
purchase at class or bring your copy of Debby Bowles book, Straight Lines to
class with you.

What you have always wanted to know but have been afraid to ask. Or, how about
those times when you didn’t have the time to sit down and figure out from
written instructions just what it meant. In this lecture the only things you
need are a notebook and a couple of pens to write down all the helpful hints and
ideas. You will learn a knife edge finish, continuous prairie points, scallop
edges for binding and borders, set-in triangle formulas and the use of those
rulers that you wondered why and what was their purpose in quilting. These are a
few of the items that will be covered in this lecture.
Norma Lee will share her quick and easy techniques for transforming strips,

With this quilt you will learn how to calculate the size of your sign and learn
how to make any size sign you want. We are doing a “Welcome” sign, so we are
working on the same project. You will leave with one set of letters and you will
be able to make any sign you wish. We will also be quilting the project at the
same time we appliqué the letters on, so you must bring your batting and backing
to class.
Bring the smell (at least in appearance) of fresh roses into you home by sewing
this 50”x50” wall hanging. We will learn trapunto, some bias seam techniques,
different binding techniques and attaching a sleeve. Fabric kits will be
available at class time. The kits will include all the fabrics you will use and
be precut and ready to sew. Price of the kits will be $35.
